Cyclonic storm OCKHI has intensified over Lakshadweep Islands, bringing heavy rain in the area and in coastal parts of Kerala.

In Lakshadweep, the Minicoy Island is worst hit by heavy rain and storm.

Indian Meteorological Department said in a release today, the system will further intensify during the next 24 hours.

In this period, it is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards across Lakshadweep Islands.

Sea condition would be phenomenal over and around Lakshadweep and would be very high along and off Kerala coast.

Officials said, the sea level has risen considerably causing sea erosion in many areas of Kerala and Lakshadweep.

The authorities have reported that 300 stranded fishermen are being rescued. Search operations are continuing for the rest. The death toll in rain related incidents in Kerala is reported to be seven.

In Tamil Nadu, the cyclone has ravaged the southern district of Kanyakumari, affecting normal life.

Hectic efforts continue for replacing about 4000 damaged electric poles to restore power supply in the district.

Search missions are being carried out by the Indian Coast Guard to look for the missing fishermen who ventured out into the sea from different fishing harbors.
