Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar on Monday sought to lay to rest a controversy surrounding an audio tape containing a purported telephonic conversation between him and a woman over her daughter’s pregnancy.

Addressing mediapersons in Chennai, Mr. Jayakumar asserted that the voice of a man, which could be heard in the audio tape, was not his.

As for his name figuring in the birth certificate of a male child, the AIADMK leader said: “Is there only one D. Jayakumar in this world? If you take a telephone directory, you can find 1,000 entries for D. Jayakumar.

Both the audio clip and the birth certificate have been doing the rounds on social media.

Stating that he would lodge a complaint with the police, Mr. Jayakumar said that even about a year ago, certain visuals showing him with someone at a star hotel were circulated on social media.

He had reported the matter to the authorities, who had arrested three persons for circulating the morphed visuals, the Minister said.

Mr. Jayakumar accused those owing allegiance to former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s jailed aide V.K. Sasikala and her nephew and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam’s founder T.T. V. Dhinakaran of having orchestrated the latest campaign against him as he had been opposing their [Sasikala’s] family.
