The police have arrested two persons who assaulted a fancy shop owner for not repaying the loan he had taken from the company they work for in Tiruvannamalai on Thursday. Footage of the attack on the shop owner was widely circulated on social media.

According to the police, Rajesh, 27, a resident of Thaanipadi, owned a fancy store on Salem High Road. He had reportedly borrowed 50,000 from a finance company in the locality and had to repay the money daily to settle the loan.

Boopalan and Pavan Kumar were the collection agents of the company. A CCTV camera from the fancy shop shows the two assaulting the man first with their hands and then with a box of footwear kept in the shop. Rajesh lodged a police complaint and the two were arrested.

“The argument started over repayment of money. Initially, there were rumours that the two are from the DMK party, but we checked with the local leaders and found that they were not affiliated to the party,” a police officer said.

The two have been remanded in judicial custody.
